Paid surveys in South Africa — know your eligibility before you start

Odyssey-owned Surveys are first-party paid research studies inside Odyssey Earn. If one is shown to your account, the current system has already checked that you are eligible before Start. The survey shows its VP reward upfront, and a valid completion is settled through Odyssey's own reward authority.

Survey availability varies. This page explains Odyssey-owned Surveys; third-party survey and offerwall opportunities are separate and can use different qualification rules.

The Odyssey difference

The survey should not reveal halfway through that you were never eligible

One of the most frustrating patterns in online survey platforms is spending time answering questions only to be screened out because of demographics that could have been checked earlier. Odyssey's first-party Survey model is designed differently.

01

Matched before Start

For Odyssey-owned Surveys, eligibility is checked before the study is shown to you. The current V0.1 model does not use a post-start demographic screen-out to decide that you were never eligible.

02

Reward shown upfront

The VP reward belongs to the canonical survey definition and is shown before you begin. The browser does not choose or calculate the reward.

03

Valid completion settles inside Odyssey

A valid completed Odyssey Survey is submitted through Odyssey's server-owned survey authority. The response and its stated VP settlement are handled together rather than relying on a third-party redirect to award the reward.

04

One response per survey

The system is designed to accept one completed response per contributor per Odyssey Survey, helping protect both reward integrity and research quality.

Two different survey lanes

Odyssey Surveys are not the same as partner survey offers

Odyssey-owned Survey

Odyssey controls eligibility, questions and VP settlement

These are studies created and administered through Odyssey's own Survey system. Candidate matching happens before display, the survey definition owns the reward, and completion is recorded inside Odyssey.

Third-party survey / offerwall

The external provider can have different rules

Partner survey opportunities can use their own qualification flow, screen-outs, completion rules and reward confirmation. The Odyssey-owned Survey promise should never be presented as a guarantee for an external provider's survey.

How survey rewards work

Know the reward before you answer question one

There is no universal Odyssey Survey payout. Each study has its own canonical VP reward, target response cap and availability window.

1. The survey appears only when it is a candidate for your account

Published status, study timing, response capacity and whether you already completed the survey are checked by the system.

2. You see the survey and its VP reward before Start

The reward is server-owned. A contributor cannot submit a different reward amount through the client.

3. A valid completion creates the response and settles its reward

Required answers, question IDs, answer types, option membership, duplicate protection and study capacity are validated by the survey authority.

4. VP then follows Odyssey Earn's normal cash-out rules

The current base value is R0.01 per VP. Cash-out currently unlocks from 10 000 VP, with Airtime and PayShap as the current methods. Any applicable cash-out fee is shown before submission.

What research can cover

Paid surveys can be useful when the research question is worth asking

Odyssey Research is being built around useful South African consumer and digital-behaviour questions rather than collecting personal data for its own sake. Study topics can differ as research campaigns change.

Retail and e-commerce behaviour

Work, education and skills

A research sample is not automatically “South Africa”

Odyssey should describe who actually answered a study. We do not claim national representativeness unless the recruitment, sample composition and weighting of that specific study justify it.

Privacy + research integrity

Aggregate insight is the product — not a list of respondents

Odyssey's research direction is to use or commercialise aggregate findings and targeted panel access without selling contributor identities, contact details or leads.

Internally, Odyssey still needs account and response records to enforce one response per survey, settle rewards, protect against duplicate submissions and operate the research system. That is different from claiming survey responses are technically anonymous.

Research-profile targeting is intended to be consented and used to decide eligibility before a future targeted survey is displayed, not as a reason to waste a contributor's time after Start.

Questions people ask

Paid surveys in South Africa — FAQ

Can I get paid for surveys on Odyssey Earn?

Yes, when an Odyssey-owned Survey is available and shown to your account. Each survey displays its VP reward before you start. Survey availability is not guaranteed and can change as studies open, close or reach their response cap.

Will an Odyssey Survey screen me out after I start?

Odyssey's current first-party Survey model checks eligibility before the survey is shown. It does not use a post-start demographic screen-out to decide that you were never eligible. A submission still has to satisfy the survey's normal validity rules, such as being within the study window, providing required answers and not submitting a duplicate response.

How much do Odyssey Surveys pay?

There is no single fixed survey reward. Each Odyssey Survey has its own server-owned VP reward and shows that amount before Start. The wider Odyssey Earn cash-out rules apply to VP after it becomes available.

Are Odyssey Surveys always available?

No. Survey inventory depends on active research studies, eligibility, study windows and response caps. A survey page can explain how the system works, but your signed-in Survey Hub is the source of truth for what is currently available to you.

Are Odyssey Surveys the same as third-party survey offers?

No. This page describes Odyssey-owned Surveys. Third-party survey or offerwall opportunities can also appear elsewhere in Odyssey Earn and can have their own qualification, screening, reward and completion rules.

Does Odyssey sell my identity with my survey answers?

Odyssey's research direction is to use or sell aggregate research insight rather than respondent identities, contact details or leads. Odyssey still needs internal account and response records for functions such as one-response enforcement, reward integrity and platform operations. Read the Privacy Policy for the broader data-handling terms.

Are Odyssey survey results nationally representative of South Africa?

Not automatically. Odyssey does not claim national representativeness unless the recruitment, sample composition and weighting of a specific study justify that claim. Research should describe the sample that was actually collected.
