South African languages on Odyssey Earn — 11 signup choices, variable task inventory

Odyssey Earn's current signup form presents 11 language choices. That is a platform-language choice set — not a promise that all 11 languages have active tasks at the same time.

Task coverage changes by format, campaign and remaining inventory. This page separates those two facts so “supports a language” is not confused with “a paid task is available right now.”

What about Sepedi and siSwati?

Both are present in the current signup language choices. At the 25 August 2026 database audit, neither had active `feed_cards` inventory. That is an inventory statement, not a decision to exclude either language from Odyssey's broader language roadmap.

Voice inventory is narrower

Voice scripts use their own language coverage

Voice recording is not simply another copy of text-task inventory. At the same audit, active voice scripts existed in four language pairs with English.

Voice tasks include an explicit consent step and can require approval before VP is settled. A language being listed here does not guarantee that an uncompleted voice script will be available to a particular contributor.

Different task types, different coverage

Language coverage is not one flat matrix

Translation

Depends on active translation cards for the requested language.

Captioning + labelling

Depends on active image cards and valid image inventory for that language.

Words + local expressions

Depends on active word-task inventory.

Conversation

Only appears where a matching conversation task has been published.

Code-switching

Appears only where a task specifically asks for mixed-language responses.

Voice + transcription

Uses separate script and audio inventory with its own eligibility and review rules.

Why the distinction matters

“Supported” should never silently become “guaranteed paid work”

Odyssey can support a language in account setup, data design or future campaigns without having an active paid task for that language today. Publishing both the language-choice set and the inventory snapshot keeps those meanings separate.

Current disclosure

Language choices at signup do not guarantee active task inventory. Availability changes by task type, campaign and remaining inventory.

Frequently asked questions

How many language choices does Odyssey Earn offer at signup?

The current signup form presents 11 language choices: English, Afrikaans, isiZulu, isiXhosa, Sepedi, Setswana, Sesotho, Xitsonga, siSwati, Tshivenda, isiNdebele.

Does Odyssey Earn always have tasks in all 11 languages?

No. A language being available as a signup choice does not guarantee that active task inventory exists for that language at a particular moment. Inventory changes by task type, campaign and remaining capacity.

Which languages currently have active Odyssey Feed tasks?

At the 25 August 2026 public inventory audit, active first-party Feed cards existed in 9 language keys: Afrikaans, English, isiNdebele, Sesotho, Setswana, Tshivenda, isiXhosa, isiZulu, Xitsonga. This is a dated snapshot, not a promise of future availability.

Does Odyssey Earn support code-switching?

Odyssey's task architecture includes code-switching tasks. They appear only when matching active inventory exists and the task specifically asks for a natural language mix; code-switching is not automatically required in every language task.

Does every task type exist in every language?

No. Translation, captioning, labelling, conversation, code-switching, voice and transcription inventory have different coverage. Odyssey does not claim that every task format exists in every signup language.
