AI training tasks in South Africa — what the work actually looks like

On Odyssey Earn, “AI training tasks” means short human language and data-contribution work: translating text, transcribing speech, describing or labelling images, writing natural responses, code-switching and, when available, recording consented voice data.

These contributions can help create, label or evaluate datasets used for language and AI systems. That does not mean every response is immediately used to train a particular model, and Odyssey does not guarantee a constant stream of tasks or income.

What “AI training” means here

AI still needs people who understand language, meaning and context

Models learn from data, but useful language data often needs human judgement. A person can recognise whether a translation sounds natural, what an image actually shows, how a phrase is used locally, or where South Africans naturally switch between languages.

Odyssey turns pieces of that work into small contributor tasks. The task is the product interaction; the broader purpose is better-structured language and data assets, not asking contributors to build an AI model themselves.

Real Odyssey task types

The work is concrete — not a vague promise to “train AI”

Current Odyssey Earn architecture supports several language and data task formats. Which ones you actually see depends on available inventory, language matching and the active campaign.

01

Translation

Translate short phrases or sentences into a requested South African language when matching tasks are available.

02

Transcription + audio

Listen to audio and turn speech into text, or complete related audio-language tasks where the task instructions require it.

03

Image captioning

Describe what an image shows using the requested language, wording or local context.

04

Image labelling

Identify or label objects and details in an image using the requested language or local vocabulary.

05

Conversation responses

Write natural responses to short scenarios so language data can reflect how people actually communicate rather than only textbook phrases.

06

Code-switching

Rewrite or respond to prompts using natural mixtures of languages where the task specifically asks for code-switched South African speech or writing.

07

Words + local language

Complete short word, meaning or local-expression tasks that test or capture South African language knowledge.

08

Voice recording

Read a short script aloud when a voice task is available. Current voice collection requires an explicit consent step and can require approval before VP is settled.

South African language data

Local language knowledge is the skill

South African communication is not only formal dictionary language. It includes regional wording, slang, borrowed words, accents and natural code-switching between languages.

That is why Odyssey's language tasks can ask for more than literal translation. A useful answer may depend on how people actually speak, write, describe places or understand a phrase in context.

Odyssey currently supports 11 South African languages across relevant language-task experiences. Availability still differs by language and campaign, so that number should not be read as a promise that every task type is live in every language at the same time.

Not a salaried AI job

Microtasks are different from employment

Odyssey Earn is a contributor platform. A task is a discrete earning opportunity you can choose to complete when it is available; it is not a shift, salary, employment contract or promise of recurring hours.

What Odyssey can show

A specific task, its instructions, its task-specific VP reward or status, and whether that opportunity is currently available to you.

What Odyssey should not promise

Guaranteed daily income, guaranteed task volume, salaried work, fixed hours, or a claim that every contribution trains a particular third-party AI model.

Rewards + review

The task tells you what it is worth — settlement can depend on the task type

Odyssey does not use one universal payout for every language or data task. Different task types can have different VP rewards and different validation or approval paths.

Read the task before doing the work

The task itself is the source of truth for its instructions, language, reward and submission state.

Some contributions need more review than others

Current voice-recording contributions include consent and can remain pending for approval. Do not assume every task settles in the same way or at the same time.

VP follows the normal Odyssey cash-out rules

The current base value is R0.01 per VP. Cash-out currently unlocks from 10 000 VP, with Airtime and PayShap as the current methods. Any applicable cash-out fee and the amount you will receive are shown before submission.

Voice + consent

Voice is data about you — so the consent boundary matters

A voice recording is not the same as typing a translation. Odyssey's current voice flow asks for explicit consent before recording and submission, and stores operational information needed to manage the contribution and review process.

You should decide whether to participate after reading the task and consent information. The public description of an AI task should never replace the consent shown at the point where personal data is actually collected.

Questions people ask

AI training tasks in South Africa — FAQ

Can I do AI training tasks in South Africa?

Yes. Odyssey Earn is a South African web platform that can offer short language and data-contribution tasks when inventory is available. These can include translation, transcription, captioning, labelling, conversation, code-switching and voice-related work.

What is an AI training task?

In this context, it means a human data task that can help create, label, evaluate or improve datasets used for language and AI systems. It does not mean every answer you submit is immediately used to train a particular named AI model.

Do I need AI or coding experience?

You do not need to build or program an AI model to complete these tasks. You do need to follow the task instructions and have the language or context knowledge the task asks for.

Are AI tasks always available on Odyssey Earn?

No. Task availability can change by language, task type, campaign, account eligibility and remaining inventory. Odyssey Earn should not be treated as guaranteed work or guaranteed income.

How are Odyssey AI and language tasks paid?

Tasks show their VP reward in the product. Reward status and settlement timing can differ by task type; for example, current voice contributions can require approval. VP then follows Odyssey Earn's normal cash-out rules. The current base value is R0.01 per VP and cash-out currently unlocks from 10 000 VP.

Does Odyssey use my voice without consent?

Current Odyssey voice-recording tasks include an explicit consent step before recording and submission. Voice work is a different contribution type from ordinary text tasks, and contributors should read the task and consent information before choosing to participate.

Are these AI jobs?

Odyssey Earn is a contributor and microtask platform, not salaried employment. Tasks are short earning opportunities when available, not guaranteed hours, wages or ongoing employment.
